Summary and Reflection of Gattaca
Gattaca is a science fiction film. According to this film, most human beings will be born by genetic engineering in the future. All of them are the elites in that world, but the main character, Vincent, is a weak person because he is born by the natural way. He has many health problems, and he also only has thirty years to live. Vincent always does exercise to prove his own ability and body. In addition, he leaves his home to achieve his dream of space travel. He is a cleaner when he goes to the Space Company for the first time. One day, he takes an athlete who has the perfect genes, Eugene’s identity to enter the company because Eugene’s legs are paralyzed and he needs someone to help him. Next, Vincent must face rigorous tests to prove the “valid identity” every day such as blood test and urinalysis. Eugene needs to prepare his own blood and urine to help Vincent to pass the tests. Moreover, Vincent must clean his body carefully and burn his dead skin cells in the bathroom. However, Vincent is exposed by his eyelash after someone is killed in the company. At the same time, he falls in love with his workmate, Irene. He tells Irene all of secrets including his true identity after Irene doubts him. In the end, Vincent goes into the space through the chemist who does the urinalysis successfully. However, Eugene burns himself in the bathroom.
The society in this movie is Dystopia even though it has high technology and high Intelligence Quotient. People are determined by their DNA. For instance, Vincent can’t enter school because he has many health issues based on the DNA test. It is an unfair world for people to live in because their personal life is also decided by the DNA. I never want to live in this type of world in the future after I seeing this movie. I think it limits me from doing something. I need to follow the DNA test all the time. I do not have any human right over there because I like a bird that housed in a small birdcage even if it is gorgeous. In Gattaca, I appreciate the main character, Vincent, because he is an ambitious person. He tries his best to prove himself. He wants everybody know that he can do better than others who are born by the genetic engineering. In addition, although he faces the terrible problem in the company or rigorous tests in every day, he never gives up his dream of space travel. He uses his perseverance and striving to achieve his dream in the end. I want to be a person like him because I think success belongs to someone who never gives up his or her dream in the future.
