CAT-W practice #2
Recently these have been many technological advances in the twenty-first century. Electronic devices are all around us. They are important for our lives in many ways. For example, people have used computer to search and save information that they need immediately. In addition, cellphone also is a necessary tool for people in the daily life. It not only has connected with each other, but also is an entertainment, such as listening music, seeing movies, and reading books, and so on. Even though cellphone is a good tool, it also has some negatives, especially for the students because cellphone will take students’ attention in the classroom.
According to the article, “Hang it up” by Jesse Scaccia, we could know that cellphone was an enemy for students and teachers in the classroom. It distracted students’ attention in the class. Moreover, parents thought cellphone was a tool for them to connect their children when children had some problems. However, cellphone stood for a status for students in the school. Cellphone was a biggest problem in public school. Based on the article, more than 800cellphones were confiscated by the New York City schools chancellor recently. Scaccia thought cellphone shouldn’t be allowed in the classroom. I agree with her because I think classroom is a great place for students to get knowledge. It is not a place for entertainment or wasting times. Cellphone is a limited thing in the classroom owing to give negatives effects for students when they study in there.
The author, Scaccia stated, “A student with a cellphone is an uninterested student, one with a short attention span who cares more about his or her social life than education.” This means cellphone takes all of attention when students had a class. Students care about their social life or personal thing more than get knowledge. For instance, I use my electronic dictionary when my teacher talks sometime. As a result, I lost some important notes. I can’t get same information like before because the time was past even though teachers can repeat it again. However, in the college, if students do not pay attention when the professor talks, they will fail the class or can’t follow the step in the class because the professor can’t repeat all the time if someone does not pay attention. It is very serious issue for students to use cellphone in the class.
What does cellphone stand for? Based on this article, Jesse Scaccia thought “cellphones are status symbols.” I agree with her. A famous popular cellphone will elevate people’s class in the classroom. When someone brings the new smart phone in the class, others will ask her or him something about this phone. However, if someone brings the old phone, others will say “You are out.” Moreover, students will get more interested in the new phone than education. They will use the phone to make own self becomes cool such as game. It is not a good way for students to stand for own status.
For these reasons, cellphones do not belong in the classroom because classroom is a great place for student to get a lot of information. Using phone in the classroom can take students’ attention when they study. Therefore, students can’t get more knowledge from teachers. If classroom is a land, students are crops, and then cellphones are locust. Cellphone will “hurt” or affect students just like locusts only damage all of crops. Please do not use cellphone in the classroom. If you can’t do it immediately, you can do it little by little. You will be successful one day after you reduce the chance for using cellphone day by day.
