“Miss Evers Boys” review
Miss Evers Boys was a nonfiction movie that I saw recently. It is about the Tuskegee experiment in Tuskegee Hospital, Alabama from 1932 to 1972. The main character Eunice Evers, who is a nurse, helps Dr. Sam Brodus and Dr. Douglas to persuade the rural black men to get free treatment because all of them have “bad blood”. In fact, those black men have syphilis. The government wants to compare the difference between white men and black men who have syphilis. In addition, Miss Evers makes friends with four guys who form a dance team “Miss Evers Boys”. Also, she falls in love with one member of this team, Caleb. Later, both Miss Evers and doctors stop giving useful treatment to those black men because the government thinks it wastes money and does not help the experiment. However, they continue doing experiment for six months to one year because this experiment is good for the medical treatment in the future. They just give those men some placebos and liniments in fact. Sometimes Miss Evers is confused, she wants to tell the truth to Caleb and her friends, but she cannot do that because it is the secret of government. Eventually, Caleb joins the army for WW II and he is cured of syphilis by the penicillin. Al of his friends died from the experiment except Willie. He and Miss Evers do not stay together in the end. In 1972, Miss Evers tells this fact when she sits in the court. She tells the judges that it is unfair for black men.
In my opinion, this movie makes me appreciate, but I do not like this kind of movie. It is too boring and difficult for me. In addition, I do not have any feeling about the Tuskegee experiment even though it is a cruel historical event. My heart is neutral. For me, I think Miss Evers makes a wrong choice in this case because she loses her lover and friends by this experiment. She wants to prove this experiment is good action, but she cannot deprive black men of life and happiness. She is an accomplice in this case.
